The Twilight and Sunday market of weekend 3-5 November is dedicated to the brave Mia Cara. We urge all to buy a raffle ticket during the month of October to support her. Big prizes to be won! Please read her story below:
Mia Cara was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia at the age of 3 in 2015. After 21 months of intense chemotherapy, lumber punches and bone marrow biopsies, her parents received the devastating news in May 2017 that she relapsed.
In South Africa the only option is another round of even more intense chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant with radiation. Unfortunately, there is currently no match (bone marrow donor) for her and even if a match is found, there is only a 40% success rate. A 40% survival rate.
However, there is HOPE. Hope in the form of (CAR) T-cell therapy being developed for the treatment of cancer in the USA.
T-cells are removed from the patient or a donor’s blood and genetically engineered to fight the cancer cells. These cells are dubbed serial killer cells, as they hunt the cancer cells until they have destroyed them all.
It is being described as the biggest thing in cancer treatment in at least the last 30 years. The success rates vary between 86% and 98%.
Her parents have received news from the Philadelphia Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that Mia Cara may enter one of their trials, but before her name is to be added onto the list an amount of R10 million must be paid upfront.
R10 million stands between a 40% survival rate and a 98% survival rate.
Please join us in giving Hope for Mia Cara. Please help us to raise the R10 million needed to send this little girl to America where she can start her journey back to life. Your contribution will make a difference.
